The three numbers you need
First, how many calls do you miss in a month? Check your phone's call log or your carrier's records. Count calls that went to voicemail, rang out, or came in after hours.
Second, what share of callers would have become customers? Not every call is a new job - some are existing customers or sales calls. A conservative guess for new-business calls might be one in three or one in five.
Third, what's an average job worth to you? Use your real average ticket, not your best one.
A worked example
Say you miss 20 calls a month. If one in four would have become a customer, that's 5 lost jobs. If your average job is worth $200, that's $1,000 a month in work that went somewhere else - $12,000 a year.
Your numbers will be different. A salon with a $60 average ticket and a roofing company with an $8,000 average job will land in very different places. That's the point: run your own numbers, not someone else's statistics.
Why voicemail doesn't capture them
Many callers don't leave messages, especially when they can see five other businesses in their search results. The caller with an urgent need - a burst pipe, a broken AC, a lockout - is the least likely to wait and the most valuable to win.
Even callers who do leave a message often book with whoever calls back first. Speed matters as much as answering.
